Missing Her Late Parents:
Each time I learned I was on the cover of a publication, I’d immediately send off for 4 copies. One for my records. Three to be sent immediately to Anambra State. My father would keep one, my mother would have the extra two to show off to friends and relatives, which always made her so happy…

A few days ago I learned my reading event was on the cover of the Guardian. I asked someone to buy 4 copies. Then when he brought them back, I stared at them with a dawning, flat emptiness and realized: “I cannot send them to Abba.”

They lie here still.

Of such exquisitely painful moments of forgetting is grief made.”

My 7-Year-Old Daughter Has Never Been Treated For Malaria – Chimamanda Adichie Says at The writer stated this at the 2022 summit on Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), which held in Kigali, Rwanda.
“When my daughter was born, I told myself that I will try very hard to make sure she did not get malaria before she turns six. I had read somewhere that children are a little bit more resilient to illness after the age of six.

“I knew how terrible malaria had been in my own childhood. I didn’t want her to suffer as I had.

“So every day I would very meticulously, spray her skin with insect repellent, her ears, her toes, her neck. And so instead of that innocent scent of babies like fresh talcum and lavender, my daughter smelled of insect repellent.

“I often examined the mosquito window net, checking for holes. A frequent refrain that friends and family heard when they visit was, ‘mèchíé ụ́zọ̀ ọ́sọ́-ọsọ, màkà mosquito (in Igbo).’ Shut the door quickly because of mosquitos.

“My daughter will turn seven this October and she has never had malaria. This is a tiny example of what can be achieved if we put our minds to it. I remember a cousin telling me my daughter would get malaria no matter what I did.”

Chimamanda Adichie: Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe
‘It is impossible for a Nigerian writer of my generation to escape the influence of the two Great Men of Nigerian literature, Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka. Achebe’s sublime fiction gave me, as a child, permission to tell my own stories, to do with confidence what I love most in the world. I came to Soyinka later, first struggling through his plays, staples of secondary school literature classes, and then discovering his memoirs, and finding in them a kind of fellow feeling.
Is this a good place to confess my crush, an overly bashful crush, on this politically courageous literary stylist, who also happens to be, in his eighties, striking and supple-skinned, with a lean energy, a sense of dramatic flourish, a resonant voice not unaware of its own music?’ – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Chimamanda Adichie and Soyinka
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Hails Wole Soyinka

Wole Soyinka
You are, for me, a guiding light:
Your courage. The ease with which you inhabit your skin, speaking your mind, unburdened by apology.
Your kindness and humour.
Your utter coolness.
The urgent, terse poetry of The Man Died, the exuberance of Ake; your faith in possibility, in adventure, in progress.
Yes indeed, ‘the mindless ones are neither the total sum nor the true face of humanity.’
Thank you, Prof.
Chimamanda Adichie And Chinua Achebe: Are They Related? No, Chimamanda Adichie and Chinua Achebe are not related but Achebe influenced Chimamanda Adichie’s career as a writer after she read her ‘Things Fall Apart’.
Chimamanda Adichie Meets German Chancellor Merkel
“My mother and I always watched and admired Chancellor Merkel, for her steady, measured, effective leadership, for the reassuring feeling that comes with seeing a proper grown-up leader on the world stage — intelligent, prepared, practical.⁣
What an honour and delight it was to be in conversation with her in Düsseldorf — and wearing a dress repurposed from my mother’s old ‘george’ wrapper. ⁣
My mother would have been so pleased.”
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Religion, Catholic Church: Chimamanda Adichie is a Christian. She was born a Catholic, from a Catholic family & home.
Chimamanda Adichie called out the Catholic church after her parents’ burial over the Catholic policy.
The Catholic Church teaches that one of the seven corporal works of mercy is to ‘bury the dead.’⁣
The Holy Mass is sacred. ⁣
The Holy Mass in honour of the dead is especially sacred. ⁣
The Holy Mass is NOT an avenue for settling petty scores and for airing the insecurities of small-minded clergy.⁣
The dead deserve dignity.⁣
I would like to start a storytelling movement on this issue. Please join me.⁣
Share your own stories about your experience of burials and funerals in the Nigerian Catholic Church.⁣
Name the parish and the town and the date(s) but please do NOT name the priest or the bishop. We do not want to risk turning this into a personal witchhunt.⁣
Be as detailed as possible about what happened.⁣
Tyranny thrives in the face of silence. ⁣
Let us tell our stories and hopefully put an end to this.⁣
As Pope John XXIII said when he opened the Second Vatican Council, it is time to “open the windows and let in the fresh air.”⁣
Please post here only if you have a story. If you want to write a blind defence of the church, consider all the other more constructive ways that you could use your time instead. ⁣
May this begin a much-needed change.⁣
Reading correspondences from Catholic Church Members who suffered because of church policy when their loved ones died, Chimamanda Adichie reacted this:
Our case was not about owing church levies. My family paid all church levies. Our case was about a deranged priest — and his supportive superiors.

But reading these stories (this is just a tiny selection to keep the video from being too long), I am horrified and stunned by what people have gone through.

I had no idea.

It is a Christian duty to bury the dead. The Roman Catholic teaches that burying the dead is a corporal work of mercy.

Compassion is a core premise of Christianity. People are at their most vulnerable when grieving. It is particularly in periods of grief that people need kindness and support.

But many Nigerian Catholic Churches wait for when people are grieving to show the most cold-hearted avarice, the most frightening detachment from all that is humane and human.

It is demoralizing.

For any Catholic anywhere in Nigeria who is “refused” the burial of a loved one because that loved one owed levies, let me know on chimamanda dot com. Ask the church for a legitimate and itemized bill. Payment will be made to the church’s official bank account.

To all those who sent in their stories, please accept my sympathy. Ndo nu.” –
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Quotes:
1 The greatest gift for a writer is a reader who gets it.
2 “Writing is the love of my life. It’s the thing that makes me happiest when it is going well — apart from the people I love. Fiction gives me a transcendent joy [where] I feel as though I am suspended in my fictional walls.”
3 “The loss of a loved one leaves you at your most fragile, and it is at that point that you deserve the most kindness from the church.
Kindness should be part of the job description of Catholic leadership. Some people are born kind but kindness can also be learned.”
4 I love my fans.⁣
And what, to me, are fans?⁣
The people who read my work, engage with it, love it, wrestle with it, remember it, quote it, are moved by it, changed by it.⁣
There is no greater gift for a writer than to be properly read.⁣
Dear fans, wherever you are: I am so grateful to you, and for you.
On Her Book: ‘We should All be Feminists
“Feminism for me has been about unlearning and learning, questioning and reflecting. It is a process, a lifelong journey, a way of looking clear-eyed at the world as it is while imagining the world as it should be. And not only imagining but making changes, big and small, to ensure that our daughters inherit a world more just than their mothers inherited.⁣⁣
I hope this guided journal (with vanity-pleasing pictures! 😜), available in the US, will help you on your own journey.⁣⁣”
